Elisangela Adriano

Elisângela Maria Adriano (born July 27, 1972 in São Paulo) is a Brazilian shot putter and discus thrower, whose personal best put is 19.30 metres, achieved in July 2001 in Tunja. Her personal best discus throw is 61.96 metres, achieved in May 1998 in São Leopoldo. In 1999 she was suspended by the IAAF for a two-year period, but she was later early reinstated. She competed in both the discus and shot put at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics, without reaching the final in either event. She also competed in the discus at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2009 World Championships in Athletics.

She won the discus and shot put events at the 2009 Brazilian national championships. She holds the South American record in both events. She won her seventh continental discus title at the 2009 South American Championships in Athletics with a championship record of 61 metres. She also won the shot put silver medal behind Chilean Natalia Ducó. She added the 2009 Lusophony Games shot put gold to her list of honours the following month. In the 2010 season, she won the discus gold at the 2010 Ibero-American Championships and later gained her fourteenth national title in the discus at the Troféu Brasil de Atletismo.

She is the Brazilian record holder in the discus throw and also holds the shot put national record both indoors and out.

Vivian Chukwuemeka

Vivian Chukwuemeka (born May 4, 1975) is a Nigerian shot putter. She also competes in discus throw and hammer throw, but not on world level.

She competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics and the World Championships in 2003 and 2005 without reaching the finals. She won a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Her personal best throw is 18.43 metres, achieved in April 2003 in Walnut. This is the African record.

She graduated from Azusa Pacific University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Social Work.

Irina Korzhanenko

Irina Korzhanenko (born May 16, 1974 in Azov) is a former Russian shot putter. She gained international recognition when she won a bronze medal at the 1997 IAAF World Indoor Championships. In the following years she became European Indoor champion, European champion and World Indoor champion.

At the 2004 Summer Olympics she originally won the gold medal in shot put, but tested positive for stanozolol and was stripped of the medal. She later received a life ban from the IAAF in a Memorandum of September 21, 2005. Irina refused to return the gold medal, despite the pressure of national Athletics Federation's officials. She said she did not use stanozolol and that Russian officials gave her no help to prove it or to defend herself.

Galina Zybina

Galina Ivanovna Zybina (born January 22, 1931 in Leningrad, USSR) was a Russian shot-putter and javelin thrower who won three Olympic medals. She trained at VSS Zenit and later at VSS Trud. Her fame rests primarily on eight consecutive world records in the shot put (1952 - 1956).

By 1950, however, she was a major force in track-and-field throwing events, holding Soviet records in the javelin, sport grenade, and shot put. Between 1952 and 1956 she set 14 Soviet shot put records.Zybina won a gold in the shot put.

Natallia Mikhnevich

Natallia Mikhnevich (born May 25, 1982 in Nevinnomyssk, Russian SFSR) is a Belarusian shot putter.

She finished third at the 2000 World Junior Championships, but first appeared on the international athletics scene at the 2004 Olympics, where she finished 5th. She repeated this position at the World Athletics Final later that year, and in 2005 she was able to win the bronze medal in this meet. In 2006 she won the World Indoor Championships in Russia with a new personal best throw (indoor) of 19.84 metres.

She won a silver medal in Women's shot put at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Her outdoor personal best is 20.70 metres, achieved in July 2008 in Grodno.

Tamara Press

Tamara Natanovna Press (born 10 May 1937 in Kharkiv, Ukraine) is a former Soviet shot putter and discus thrower in the 1960s. She competed for VSS Trud. Together with her younger sister Irina Press, who was also a track athlete, she was half of the "Press Sisters", a duo who won almost everything that there was to win in track and field, except for distance running.

At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy, Tamara won the gold medal in the shot put and the silver medal in the discus. At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, she won the gold medal in both events. In the shot put and in the discus throw she set six world records.

Tamara was also successful in the European championships. In 1958 in Stockholm she was third in the shot put, and in 1962 in Belgrade she was the European champion in the shot put as well as the discus.

Questions regarding gender
It was said of both sisters that their gender could not be determined. Some even thought that they might be hermaphrodites — still another opinion was that they were being injected with male hormones in order to make them stronger. Detractors called them the "Press Brothers". After gender verification for all international sporting female events was made mandatory in 1966 (curtailed in Sydney in 2000), both vanished from the sporting scene.

Margitta Gummel

Margitta Gummel (née Helmbold; born 29 June 1941 in Magdeburg) is a German former shot putter Olympic gold medalist. She competed for the Unified German team in the 1964 Summer Olympics, East Germany in the 1968 Summer Olympics, and East Germany again at the 1972 Summer Olympics. One of the details characterising Gummel was her rivalry with Nadezhda Chizhova of the Soviet Union.

Margitta Gummel did not win any medals in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where she competed in the shot put event. Later, at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, she won a gold medal in the shot put event, and, four years later, a silver medal in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, having been beaten by her rival Nadezhda Chizhova. In the 1968 shot put event, she became the first woman to throw more than 19 metres.

Gummel also competed for East Germany in the European Indoor Championships. In 1966, at Dortmund, she placed first in the shot put event. In 1968, this time at Madrid, she placed second in the shot put, beaten by Nadezhda Chizhova. At Sofia, in 1971, she also placed second in shot put, beaten again by Chizhova.

She also competed in the European Championships. In the 1966 Championships, held in Budapest, she placed second in the women's shot put. Chizhova placed first. She later competed in the 1969 Championships, held in Athens, with the same results. She also participated in the 1971 Championships, held in Helsinki, but this time received third as her rival Chizhova placed first.

It was later revealed that Gummel was one of the first East Germans to be administered steroids though she was not given her first dose of Turinabol until 28 July 1968, just under three months before the 1968 Games. A 1997 paper from the journal Clinical Chemistry reproduces charts from a 1973 DVfl scientific report that plot her Turinabol doses and competition distances for 1968, 1969 and 1972. The 1968 results show a 2 metre improvement in the space of the 3 months leading to her Olympic gold, in a fully trained athlete whose previous results had been consistent.

Nadezhda Vladimirovna Chizhova (born 29 September, 1945 in Usolye-Sibirskoye) is a Soviet shot putter who won three Olympic medals and set seven new world records. Nadezhda Chizhova trained at VSS Spartak. She became the first woman to break both the 20 metre and 21 metre barrier. Her toughest rival was Margitta Gummel.

Vita Pavlysh

Vita Pavlysh is a former athlete who specialised in the shot put.

Pavlysh was stripped of her 1999 IAAF World Indoor Championships gold medal after she had tested positive for anabolic steroid stanozolol at the event in Maebashi, Japan. She claimed that she may have taken the drug to aid her recovery from injury. For this offence she received a two year ban.

Five years later at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Budapest, Hungary she won the title again only to fail the drug test for the same reason. She was again stripped of her title and banned from athletics for life.

Whether because of her drug-use or not, Pavlysh was famed for her very muscular lower body. During a state television show her middle-thigh was measured at 98cms and her calf at 65cms.

At the same event Russian Anastasiya Kapachinskaya failed her drug test was also stripped of the gold that she had won in the 200 m and received a two year ban.

Ilona Briesenick, née Schoknecht divorced Slupianek (born September 24, 1956 in Demmin) is a retired German athlete who starred mainly in the shot put. She was disqualified for doping at the 1977 European Cup, where she dominated her event with a superlative 21.20.

She competed for East Germany in Moscow (USSR) where she won the gold medal, at the 1980 Summer Olympics.

Claudia Losch

Claudia Losch (born January 10, 1960 in Wanne-Eickel) is a German track and field athlete.

Losch won the German indoor championship in the shot put in 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988, and 1989. She won the German championship from 1982 through 1990, nine times in a row.

At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles she won the gold medal ahead of Romanian Mihaela Loghin, who won the silver, and Gael Martin from Australia who won the bronze.

Marianne Adam (born 19 September 1951) is a retired shot putter who competed for East Germany in the 1970s. She was born in Luckenwalde. She was a member of SC Dynamo Berlin. She won the bronze medal at the 1974 European Championships in Athletics, and at the European Indoor Championships she won one gold medal (1975), one silver medal (1979) and two bronze medals (1972, 1974).

Her personal best throw was 21.86 metres, which puts her sixth in the all-time performers list.
